Less tourists in 2016

02-03-2017

In the year of 2016 Switzerland saw a further decline in the amount of tourists, numbers are published by the Jungfrau Zeiting. Due to difficult snow conditions and the high price-level of Switzerland the competition of other areas is getting more serious.

The statistics are very clear: in the Bernese Oberland there was a decline of 2.4% in comparisation with 2015. In Graubünden and Wallis this was 1.9%. Especially European citizens are losing their loyalty for the Swiss mountains. The high price level is one of the most important reasons. Also Chinese and Japanse tourists avoided the Swiss mountains due to the terrorism complications in Europe. And after all the difficult winter seasons of 2014, 2015 and 2016 are taking part in this story.
Also this year the winter season has some complications. At the moment it's snowing, but the temperatures are relatively high. In most valleys the snow has transformed into rain. Next week the 'Föhn-effect' will lose it's power and the temperatures will decline. Also next week there are several oppurtinities for fresh snow.
